Portals is a global art initiative created by Portals Organization that places large-scale sculptures in iconic public spaces around the world. Each Portal is a large, circular sculpture that functions as a live, unfiltered window into another city on the other side of the world, running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The experience only works if it feels real. Not like a livestream, but like an actual portal to another side of the world.
That means any jitter, any freeze, any drop in connection quality instantly breaks the magic. The illusion of standing in front of a live window to another world disappears the moment the image stutters.
While the concept is beautifully simple, the technical reality behind it is complex. Portals are installed in high-traffic public locations across different countries, each with its own network infrastructure and varying levels of connection stability. What works reliably in one city may perform very differently in another.
The challenge was not about finding connectivity in remote locations. It was about guaranteeing consistent, stable, high-quality connectivity across a diverse and growing network of urban environments worldwide, where no two locations are the same. Together, they integrated Peplink BR2 Pro routers into the latest generation of the Portals. At the heart of the solution is SpeedFusion, Peplink’s patented connectivity technology. Rather than relying on a single connection that may vary in quality depending on the location, SpeedFusion intelligently combines multiple connectivity sources into one stable, unified tunnel. This ensures that the Portal always has the best possible connection available, regardless of what the local network environment looks like. Fluctuations, congestion, and instability in any individual connection are absorbed before they ever reach the livestream.
The result is the smooth, jitter-free image that makes Portals feel like what it is meant to be: not a screen, but a window.
Frontier EU supplied the hardware and provided ongoing technical support, working closely with the Portals Organization to ensure the solution was correctly configured and optimized for each new location. All devices can be monitored and managed remotely through InControl2, ensuring full visibility over the global network without the need for on-site intervention.
